Recently we have been seeing some switches that have come back to Simplifi Networks with power supplies blown out.
Power issues are NOT covered under warranty and they cannot be replaced under RMA. When we ask questions, we have found most people are not aware of proper grounding and earthing procedures and standards. PLEASE take time to understand grounding and earthing. As you know, Umeme does not have the most stable power.
We recommend the following actions to prevent switch failures from happening
1. Ground your switch to the rack, this is done through the mounting ears or a screw on the back or side of switch, use proper cable
2. Ground the rack to a proper earthing system, such as a copper pole in the ground close to the rack locations
3. Install power stabilizers
4. A UPS or solar does not mean you have grounded properly and you can still have damage to your device connected to UPS or solar system, make sure these devices are also properly grounded. UPS are powered by electric outlets and many solar devices have hybrid charging systems
5. Use proper plugs – we have seen people using EU plugs in UK sockets, this does not ground your products and should never be used
6. Use proper cabling for POE connections, this should be solid copper, shielded, and using shielded connectors, very critical for any equipment installed outside
7. Outdoor devices should have surge protectors that are properly grounded
Following these guidelines will help in your installation and the life of all your switches, routers, and other devices.
